José Luis Basso nato a Buenos Aires e di nazionalità italo-argentina, ha studiato Pianoforte e Direzione d’Orchestra presso l’Università della sua città natale. È stato nominato Maestro del Coro al Teatro Argentino di La Plata dove ha trascorso quattro anni preparando opere liriche e corali. Nel 1989 ha assunto l’incarico di Maestro del Coro al Teatro Colón di Buenos Aires. Nello stesso anno ha diretto il Coro dell’Associazione Wagner di Buenos Aires e nel 1994 è diventato Assistente del celebre Maestro del Coro Romano Gandolfi. Negli anni successivi divenne Maestro del Coro al Teatro di San Carlo di Napoli, innestando in quell’organismo corale un nuovo dinamismo, come dimostrò il notevole consenso con cui furono accolte le sue direzioni del Lohengrin e della Nona Sinfonia di Beethoven. Passato poi a dirigere il Coro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, nel 2003 ha vinto un Grammy Award con quel Coro e il soprano Renée Fleming per l’album Bel Canto. Negli ultimi due decenni ha lavorato al fianco di molti dei più importanti direttori d’orchestra mondiali: Zubin Mehta, Giuseppe Sinopoli, Claudio Abbado, Riccardo Muti, Georges Prêtre, Antonio Pappano, Seiji Ozawa, Wolfgang Sawallisch, Carlo Maria Giulini, Myung-Whun Chung, Peter Schreier, Bruno Bartoletti, Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos, Semyon Bychkov, Daniel Oren, Valery  Gergiev, Stéphane Denève, Jordi Savall, Fabio Luisi, Marc Piollet, Pinchas Steinberg, Michael Boder, Sebastian Weigle, Gerd Albrecht e Josep Pons. Dal 2004 al 2014 è stato Maestro del Coro e Consulente Artistico presso il Gran Teatro del Liceu di Barcellona. Poi dal settembre 2014 al 2021 è stato Maestro del Coro dell’Opéra di Parigi. Dal 2021 al luglio 2023 è stato Maestro del Coro del Teatro di San Carlo, e da agosto 2023 è direttore del Coro del Teatro Reale di Madrid.

José Luis Basso, born in Buenos Aires and of Italian-Argentinian nationality, studied Piano and Orchestra Conducting at the University of his hometown. He was appointed Choir Master at the Teatro Argentino in La Plata, where he spent four years preparing operas and choral works. In 1989, he assumed the position of Choir Master at the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires. In the same year, he conducted the Choir of the Wagner Association of Buenos Aires, and in 1994, he became Assistant to the renowned Choir Master Romano Gandolfi.

In the following years, he became the Choir Master at the Teatro di San Carlo in Naples, infusing the choral ensemble with a new dynamism, as evidenced by the remarkable acclaim received for his direction of Lohengrin and Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony. He later took on the role of Choir Director at the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, and in 2003, he won a Grammy Award with that choir and soprano Renée Fleming for the album Bel Canto.

Over the past two decades, he has collaborated with many of the world’s most important orchestral conductors, including Zubin Mehta, Giuseppe Sinopoli, Claudio Abbado, Riccardo Muti, Georges Prêtre, Antonio Pappano, Seiji Ozawa, Wolfgang Sawallisch, Carlo Maria Giulini, Myung-Whun Chung, Peter Schreier, Bruno Bartoletti, Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos, Semyon Bychkov, Daniel Oren, Valery Gergiev, Stéphane Denève, Jordi Savall, Fabio Luisi, Marc Piollet, Pinchas Steinberg, Michael Boder, Sebastian Weigle, Gerd Albrecht, and Josep Pons.

From 2004 to 2014, he served as Choir Master and Artistic Consultant at the Gran Teatro del Liceu in Barcelona. Then, from September 2014 to 2021, he held the position of Choir Master at the Opéra de Paris. From 2021 to July 2023, he was the Choir Master at the Teatro di San Carlo, and from August 2023, he has been the Director of the Choir at the Teatro Real in Madrid.
